The Types of
Adult Braces

Adults needing teeth alignment have fundamentally the same choices in adult braces and braces alternatives as teens. Still, the pros and cons of these orthodontic technologies differ for the two groups.

For example, where many adults prefer “invisible” teeth alignment, traditional metal braces might be more socially acceptable for teens. Plus, their preoccupied minds won’t need as many reminders since the braces are affixed semi-permanently to their teeth. The following are the various teeth alignment choices:

Metal Braces

Traditional metal braces tend to cost less than other teeth aligners, and they’re more comfortable and less obtrusive than they were decades ago. For many adults, these are the best option. Not only are they affordable, but they are more effective at treating certain teeth alignment needs.

Ceramic or Clear Plastic Braces

Made of transparent, tooth-colored material, these function much like metal braces but are less noticeable. Ceramic and clear plastic braces appeal to those who don’t consider other aligner technology their best choice. They still want to straighten their teeth, but in a less obvious way.

Self-ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces work like metal and ceramic braces and come in metal or clear/ceramic material. Like the others, they use braces and a wire to align the teeth. The only difference between self-ligating braces and metal or ceramic ones is that they use doors or clips to hold the wire in place, not elastic bands.

Clear Aligners

These popular braces alternatives can help certain patients with relatively minor correction needs. But any clear aligner system is limited in what it can do, compared to braces when providing comprehensive treatment.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces, which are placed on the tongue side of the teeth, are well-suited for adults who don’t want noticeable braces yet nonetheless need a more complex way to align their teeth. These are traditional braces, only “inverted.”
